Benji B's Deviation night at XOYO

Oi! Regulars know we've been down with Benji B for years but the other week we finally got a chance to witness his crew in action at his Deviation night at XOYO in London. Dark, deep and dirty as expected it's such an awesome venue. That night featuring guests Jam City, Mickey Pearce

One of the biggest tunes of the night was Zed Bias rework of Scrufizzer's "Kick it". If I'm not mistaken it was Jam City who dropped it and it's one of those tunes that is great in your headphones but absolutely kills at a place like XOYO. That tunes is also featured on the recent Black Butter Records mixtape. Get it below.

Mad Mats - The Mixtapes

Today we revisit Swedish DJ-legend Mad Mats. As his recent jazz mixtape is flying around the blog community at the moment so we thought it was appropriate to join the praise and highlight his contribution to the global underground soulful music in general.

This 1985 national breakdancing champ (!) has been a DJ since the mid 80s and responsible for many of the best clubbing experiences in the country (e.g. Fusion, Raw Fusion, Unhous). He's also the founder of quality labels such as Raw Fusion, Local Talk, Basic Fingers and of course the mythical G.A.M.M. label (Godkänd Av Mad Mats i.e. Approved By Mad Mats) pushing artist like Red Astaire, Yam Who, Simbad, Phil Asher, Melo and many others.

He's one of those rare DJ's with serious skills and an excellent taste of music. Never bound by genres you can always count on Mats to rock the show no matter if it's hiphop, deephouse, jazz or techno. Still think I'm vague? I guess you could say he's like the Swedish reincarnation of Gilles Peterson or Benji-B and we know we're not stepping on any toes because both has played in his clubs on several occations.

Premier of Waajeed's Dirt Tech Reck on BBC Radio 1 with Benji B

This thursday Detroit mastermind Waajeed stopped by Radio 1 and Benji B's studio with a lot of new and exclusive stuff. A fantastic show that we've been looping for two days now. Amazing music from Jeedo's three (!) new projects that's going to be released on his new label Dirt Tech Reck. The first is Electric Street Orchestra, which is Waajeed new production project which features some cool guests on vocals and guest-production that's been in the works for some time now. The second is called Jeedeci, Jeedo's ode to r'n'b and Jodeci with a raw Detroit touch on it. In Jeedo's words "are meant to fornicate to...". Haha! And finally the Tiny Hearts band which is together with LA musicians Tim Kvasnosky and Deanne "Dede" Reynolds. There's a lot of funny stories and of course ill beats all the way through the show! Music on the show features collaborations with "Mad" Mike Banks of Underground Resistance, Theo Parrish, Dede, Andrés and more.

We especially dig the tracks 'Natives' and 'Deconstruct' as well as the Jeedeci project! Straight up fire!

Benji-B - The final show

DJ and radio show host extraordinaire, Benjamin Benstead a.k.a. Benji-B, has been a great source of inspiration for the Beathearts crew over the years. Starting off as an engineer for Gilles Peterson he got his own show in 2002 on BBC Radio 1xtra entitled Deviation and later renamed Soulful beats. Always cutting edge he was the first to put us on to artist such as Wajeed, Karriem Riggins, Africa Hightec, Harmonic 313, SaRa Creative Partners, Dabrye, Roska, Floating Points, SBTRKT, Mala, Geo-Logy, Robert Glasper and many, many other others.

Last Sunday was his last show on 1xtra as he now moves on to take over for Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC Radio 1 experimental beats show. The last show highlighted some of the greatest discoveries he broke over the years and what a show it was. For all fans, this is a collectors item.

Robert Glasper - Unreleased dillaludes

We just had to put this out there eventhough it's a radio rip. Robert Glaspers unreleased live performance of his amazing dillaludes.

Jazz pianist, Robert Glasper, worked with Dilla several times and the dillaludes are his ode to the late James Yancey. He recreates the vibe of some of James Yancey's finest moments together with his live band including drummer extraordinare Chris Dave.

This recording of uncut live takes was apparantly handed over to Benji B for exclusive play on his show Soulful beats on BBC 1xtra. We challange you to unveil what classic dillatracks he's covering...
