Jeedeci - Freekin U (Benji B edit)

An upcoming album from Jodeci produced by Timbaland. Waajeed's Dirt Tech Reck erupting hot sh*t like a volcano. There's a lot to look forward to in 2014.

To make the wait a bit more pleasant Waajeed has put out the first official track from his Jeedeci project for free. It's an awesome remake of Jodeci's classic slow jam "Freek'n you" here as an exclusive edit by Benji B. Get it while you can.

Dâm-Funk - Mirrors (Jeedo Hood Tech Refix)

These last couple of weeks I've been going through some of the releases we've just haven't got around to listen to. A real gem that slipped through our fingers (until now!) is Waajeed's refix of Dâm-Funk's Mirrors. Taken from Dâm's Toeachizown Waajeed has updated the track with the new hood tech sound of his new label Dirt Tech Reck. Ace!

And while you're on a Waajeed vibe you should also check out his recent Dilla Tribute set recorded in Dallas Feb 8th.

Beathearts top selections 2012 - TheStrom

2012 was a good year. A very good year. Going through our posts and playlists over the past year it was easy to identify great tunes. But it was equally hard to single out an all through solid album - a future classic. There were many good efforts from the likes of Frank Ocean, Actress, Robert Glasper and others but very few of them ended up on repeat for us. At least in their entireties. For that reason I decided to put forward the top selections of 2012 in three sections:

* Top 5 artists of year (instead of releases) that impressed me the most in 2012
* Best tunes of the year (Spotify link)
* Top 3 expectations for 2013

------------================-------------

ARTISTS OF THE YEAR

1.Prince (!?)
You say what?! I haven't quite been able to figure out why but it's been a crazy year for Prince. Prince Roger Nelson of the 80s that is. For an artist that hasn't released a single track (that we know of) Prince has been huge 2012. It might have started already last year with the return of Prince live in session at festivals around the world. Then Jam & Lewis and the Time reunited as the Original 7even and released the Condensate album. That sparked a "Nu-Prince-Movement" that's been pulsating all year:

*Wax Poetic put out a Prince special edition including no less than two mixtapes of peak performances from the man.
*All year we've been flooded with Prince edits and covers from the likes of Dâm-Funk, Frank Ocean et al.
*Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip has been tearin' the roof off with his DJ sessions when dropping the 1984 obscure Morris Day & Prince jam session Cloreen Bacon Skin.

If that doesn't convince you there's a new biography entitled Prince by Matt Thorne and the other week there was a TWO (!) day seminar at the London Institute of Contemporary Art analyzing the Prince's work.

All we can say is that his importance for most of the new music we listen to today cannot be overrated. One of the greatest tributes that's been on heavy rotation for us was the Wax Poetics mixtape vol.2:

------------================-------------

2.Tall Black Guy
Without a doubt one of the artist that we have spun the most this year. His edits, compilations and original tracks have been off the hook. His Tempo Dreams compilation for Bastard Jazz set a new standard for beatmakers to live up to.

Our stand out track of the year from TBG was his totally unexpected remake of James Brown's I feel good. You've gotta have guts to take on a classic tune and flip it into something completely different. We've said it before but it's like a part 2 of Waajeed's Tron track. Absolutely genius!

Download: Tall Black Guy - What's good

------------================-------------

3.Buscrates 16-bit Ensemble
What can we say. Orlando Buscrates Marshall has had an amazing year. As a producer for Kiara, as a group member in East Liberty Quartet, as a remixer as well as a solo artist he has blown us away all year. If Dâm-Funk is the king of boogie - Buscrates is most definitely next in line to take the reign.

*Best release: Buscrates - Funktropolis EP

*Best remake: Vesta Williams - Don't blow a good thing (Buscrates re-edit)

*Best production: Kiara Reves - Shine on

Buscrates was also the first artist in our Beat Generation Interview Series.

------------================-------------

4.Miles Bonny
Ever since we got Miles Bonny's seminal track Still Miles with DJ Day back in 2009 he's been on our radar. Numerous EPs, collaborations and albums later his sense of quality is second to none.

Miles toured heavily this year with Brenk Sinatra (as S3) in Germany and Poland going back to his Polish roots.

Miles been putting out amazing releases all year and all you regulars might recall that S3's album Supa Soul Sh*t was our album of the month in November.

Download: S3 - Don't stop

------------================-------------

5.Frank Ocean
No matter what you think about the hype there's no denying Mr. Ocean's huge influence on the soundtrack to the world 2012.

From the first underground mixtapes and bootlegs to TV-commerials and inflight entertainment he's taken the world by storm. With incredible productions and solid harmonies in my ears his sound is the 2012 equivalent to Gamble & Huff in the 70ies. Channel Orange was one of very few solid albums of 2012 and we have high hopes of what's to come in 2013.

EXPECTATIONS FOR 2013:

1.The return of Waajeed

Waajeed will be huge in 2013. On a recent BBC Radio 1 show Waajeed revealed four projects that will see the light of day next year: Jeedeci, Electric Street Orchestra, Tiny Hearts and new label Dirt Tech Reck. If you missed out get a preview of the tracks below.

2.Enter T-E-E-D

We've had T-E-E-D a.k.a. Orlando Higginbottom on our radar all year and he was responsible for one of best remixes of the year reconstructing Donaeo's When Angels sing. His mixtapes and remixes have popped up everywhere we turned and we have very high expectations for what's to come in 2013. Check his essential mix from BBC below:

>T-E-E-D - BBC essential mix

3.Maya Jane Coles

Starting off as a producer and only recently jumped on the 1's and 2's, Maya still put together one of the best mixtapes of the year for DJ-kicks. (Listen on Spotify). It's sublime blend of minimal, experimental but oh so funky deep house tracks. With the quality of her mixes and own releases expectations are through the roof for her upcoming album. Rumors say it will feature Miss Kittin among others and have vocals on all tracks. Watch this space!

Electric Street Orchestra/Waajeed - Hood tech

Still stunned by all the new projects dropped by Waajeed on Benji-B's show a few weeks back. Get it here. Electric Street Orchestra (Waajeed's experimental alias), Jeedeci (a Jodeci reconstruction project) and a new group called Tiny Hearts. All three projects to be released on his new Dirt Tech Reck label.

He recently put out one of the tunes from the label for download over att Soundcloud. In his word it's the genre defining tune Hood Tech. Wait for the drop at 1.39. Promising indeed...

Premier of Waajeed's Dirt Tech Reck on BBC Radio 1 with Benji B

This thursday Detroit mastermind Waajeed stopped by Radio 1 and Benji B's studio with a lot of new and exclusive stuff. A fantastic show that we've been looping for two days now. Amazing music from Jeedo's three (!) new projects that's going to be released on his new label Dirt Tech Reck. The first is Electric Street Orchestra, which is Waajeed new production project which features some cool guests on vocals and guest-production that's been in the works for some time now. The second is called Jeedeci, Jeedo's ode to r'n'b and Jodeci with a raw Detroit touch on it. In Jeedo's words "are meant to fornicate to...". Haha! And finally the Tiny Hearts band which is together with LA musicians Tim Kvasnosky and Deanne "Dede" Reynolds. There's a lot of funny stories and of course ill beats all the way through the show! Music on the show features collaborations with "Mad" Mike Banks of Underground Resistance, Theo Parrish, Dede, Andrés and more.

We especially dig the tracks 'Natives' and 'Deconstruct' as well as the Jeedeci project! Straight up fire!

The show is available for stream and free download right now on Waajeed's soundcloud so get it while it's available! Don't sleep on this!

PPP - Deep inside (Waajeed Belle Isle Remix)

The first time Antwan and my paths crossed was at the legendary Platinum Pied Pipers concert at the Lydmar Hotel in Stockholm 2005. Waajeed and Saadiq had brought along Tiombe Lockhart, Invincible and Rogiers and we both agree it was one of the most memorable shows we've ever seen.

We especially appreciated the fact that they sold unreleased records after the show and that's how we discovered Rogiers amazing first demo. Later on the Abundance tour Waajeed put together a mix-CD which featured this amazing remix of their Deep inside track. We loved the mixtape but we've been itching ever since that the tune wasn't released in full version. Well, now the scratching is over! This week Waajeed put out the full version via his Bling47 newsletter. (Sign up to not miss out on any goodies). Waajeed we salute you!

Sonnymoon - Houstalantavegas / DeDe - Phantom (Waajeed Refixes)

Waajeed brings more heat through bling47. This time with two mellow refixes featuring Sonnymoon and DeDe. Be sure to check out the site regularly as Waajeed drop bombs almost every day, especially the amazing series "Dilla Breaks" where producers breaks down Dilla beats and share stories and memories about the G.O.A.T. James Yancey.

I first heard about Sonnymoon at SXSW while hanging with No and Meezy from blindiforthekids.  They played their rendition of Drake’s, “Houstalantavegas” and I was instantly hooked.

Seeing that the duo doesn’t need a third leg producer, the only way I could work with them was do a remix.  We connected, they sent the vocals, and the rest is history… or at least history in the making.

@sonnymoon I’d love to work with you guys more in the future. Mucho respect. Until then, check this bling47 exclusive gem. They have new material dropping this spring and currently on tour.

Check Plug Research for the dates.

The irony of one of my happiest finds last year just happened to be in the worst place.  Rent so high that all the real artists moved out, hipster heaven Williamburg, Brooklyn — The Burg.We were introduced by my homie JT Donaldson that I used to DJ with at the W Hotel in Union Square.  I met Tim K there and later met his darling partner in crime, Dede Reynolds.  Together they are DeDe.

One late night after several Cadillac margaritas inspired by Dam Funk, we stumbled back to their apartment where I heard their yet to be released project.  WHOA!  I asked to remix the single on the spot.  That was the genesis of a brewing relation that would turn into a group (more about that later). In the meanwhile have a listen.

No need to rip the youtube.  Newsletter subscribers will get this in their box tomorrow.

Rejoice.

Blu ft. J'Davey - Everything's OK (Waajeed refix)

The re-launched Bling47 site is such a treat. Somewhat of a inbox backlog made us miss this gem first time around. Make sure you don't do the same mistake. Waajeed says:

"Kenny Fresh and I were going to release this mix on our Waajeed x FreshSelects project last year. The homie Blu asked me to remix the original version produced by Flying Lotus. After I finished this ruff mix, he asked for a two track of the instrumental to relay his vocal. He agreed to send it back so I could finish it...... It never showed up.

To quote Jay-Z, “What the fuck you done to that?” -- I gotta admit, those were the first words that came to my head when I heard what Blu (one of my favorite emcees) did to my remix. Well, It's sorta like a remix of a remix. Check his version (to get the whole story)." www.bling47.com

With this kind of heat dropping every week Waajeed is really turning up the heat for the upcoming Electric Street Orchestra album. We can't wait!

Unreleased Dilla and the reopening of bling47

In a week 6 years has passed since J Dilla aka. Jay Dee left us, seems like yesterday we woke up to the sad and tragic news of his passing. We feel we lost the most gifted musician of all time. February is Dilla Month to commemorate J Dilla, and all over the globe people makes new mixes, DJ's having Dilla nights to celebrate his memory.

Waajeed of Platinum Pied Pipers and also around/part time member of Slum Village when all went down, relaunches his site bling47.com which has been down for a couple of years now. He unveils three Dilla treasures listed below, and some beautiful short storys to go with them, fantastic stuff!

“I got this one on a cassette from T3 circa 1997. I’m not sure what it was for, or why Dilla had this on tape, but I thought it was hilarious. “Shut the F*ck Up and listen to this… this.” This kind of style was typical for our crew at this time – we were just finishing up the Fantastic Vol 1 album. It was never about what they said – but instead how they said it. We called it “R.A.W.” – Rugged And wild. And that is exactly what this one is – tape hiss and all. -Enjoy, Jeedo”

"There are plenty of music collectors that claim to have “All Things Dilla.” Maybe that’s true, if there is such a thing. With that said, I can honestly say that I’m fortunate enough to be amongst this breed. And it’s not because I am the most internet savvy or because I belong to some special  group of music nerds that have the rarest shit. In fact, I only have possession of this rareness because I happened to be there when it all happened!  And for whatever reason, call it divine intuition, I kept every cassette tape I was able to get my hands on.  I tried to collect every beattape, remix or freestyle possible. Even when we were just hanging out in Dilla’s basement in Conant Gardens, I’d often bring my hand held recorder and just tape us talking shit about any & everything.
Dilla was never the type to hoard music. Very often he’d make mixtapes for us to listen to while we drove around in his sparkling green Beamer. Those leather terracotta seats were the place to hear tracks that would never see the light of day to anyone outside of our small circle!  I remember it was a fall afternoon in 1996 and he and I were driving to a record store when he first played me the Ray J “Let It Go Remix” Version 1. I loved it then just as much as I do now. Excuse how quiet the recording is, I beat this tape up playing it over and over. The track was never released and only a very, very small hand full of people on this planet have even heard it. And now you will be among them… -Enjoy, Jeedo"

"On that fall afternoon in 1996, my jaw hit the floor as Dilla played the “Let It Go” Remix Version 1.  I looked at him as he turned the volume down half way and said in his soft stutter, “It’s — It’s cool, but I like this one better.” He turned the volume up to ten and my ears stood up anxiously waiting. I wondered how could he out do the first remix!?! The vocal played and all the elements slowly creeped in…  WOW!!! He only played it through to a little more than half of the track when he turned it down.  Laughing and covering his mouth, he said “That’s the one.” I told him to turn it back up. Version 2 was never released either. Its directly from the cassette I demanded to have when I got out of the car that afternoon. I’m still not sure which one I like better. Hit me on twitter at @jeedo47 to let me know which one you like better. -Enjoy, Jeedo"

UK MC Ben Chijioke, a.k.a. Ty, has a new album out entitled
Special kind of fool. The first single off the album, Emotions, has been reworked by Dego from 4hero as well as another of our favourite beatmakers Waajeed.

Check Waajeeds fantastic version here:
