Gilles Peterson - Worldwide Retrospective

And there it is. The final worldwide show with GP on BBC Radio 1.

Gilles Peterson. Founder of legendary record labels Acid Jazz, Talkin' Loud and Brownswood Recordings. Long time host of the Worldwide show is finishing up his era at BBC Radio 1. Since the late nineties he's been one of our greatest sources of musical inspiration and was the first to put us on to a whole pile of artist. From broken beat pioneers Bugz In The Attic and UK rapper Ty to afrobeat legend Ebo Taylor and Detroit's soul prodigy Dwele. The list goes on and on.

What we find most inspiring about Gilles is that he never cares about limiting himself to genres. If the record is original and got soul he'll play it. It's a principle we admire and do our best to fulfil ourselves. Of course we can never meet his standards but we do our best to contribute to an open mind towards new music.

Quite often Gilles is one of the first DJ:s on the planet to play a new tune or a new artist on the radio. His show is one of the few where you feel that you're missing out if you for some reason failed to tune in for a week or two.

So it's hard not to get emotional now that he's putting together a retrospective series looking back on his years at Radio 1. The first part was his last ever Brownswood basement show. A show where he pulls out rare vinly only gems from the BBC archives. The second part was the World and Jazz Retrospective going through all the amazing artist he's broken onto a global following.

The third and fourth part was the Sound Culture & Dancefloor Retrospective and the HipHop & Soul Retrospective which is probably the sections that has had most influence on us. I quite honestly didn't realize how much of an inspiration he has been until I read the tracklist below and discovered that I have almost every single one of records below on my shelves.

The good news is that he's got a new show on BBC Radio 6. Let's just hope it gets global coverage so we all can continue to follow Gilles on his quest to find the perfect beat. Mr. Peterson we salute you.
