Beathearts rewind #41: Tricky - Overcome (Al Riley 2009 rmx)

When Tricky a.k.a. Adrian Thaws' debut album Maxinquaye hit me in 1995 I was blown away. He followed up with a crazy live tour where he was either lying down och standing behind the speakers shaking his head the whole show but still spellbound the audience. Magic. Or perhaps voodoo.

Tricky is one of those artist that never really left but hasn't exactly been present either. He's put out albums on a regular basis but hasn't got that much attention. His latest album Mixed race I believe is his 9th album was released in 2010.

A while ago I stumbled over this rework of Overcome. I haven't been able to find out who's behind it but it's a brilliantly updated take on the Maxinquaye sound that so profoundly widened my pespective on music. If you know who's produced this updated version we'd love to hear from you.

Update! (July 4th 2012) The other week we were contacted by Al Riley who was the engineer for the Mixed Race album. He had read our post and told us the story behind this great Overcome remix:

"This was done in Paris during some downtime between recording sessions for Tricky for material that would eventually appear on his album Mixed Race. I wanted the remix to be stripped down to the vocal because it's such a great performance. The atmos parts were re-amped through a tiny speaker to keep them sounding lo-fi so all the lushness and warmth comes form the bass/vocal pairing.  Then I just added a pretty simple percussion break and a couple of acoustic guitar elements in the background."

We're such suckers for those great behind the scenes stories so we just had to share. Thanks Al!

Mecca:83 - Chapter two (for Lucie)

Our main man in Manchester put out, in our view, one of the best releases of 2011 entitled Life Sketches Vol. 1 & 2. Early this year he followed up with the stunningly versatile Daybreak EP. Last night he put out this free track dedicated to all DJ's, bloggers and fans that supports his productions.

Chapter two (for Lucie) is another crispy smooth Mecca:83 track to keep your head nodding on the daily commute. New material is due for release this summer. When the man keeps bringing tunes like this we can't wait!

Nas - The don (Prod. Heavy-D)

Nas is turning up the heat for his upcoming album. It's been a long time since we were this excited about a Nas album but with the tunes dropped so far is promising indeed. The dirty rugged beats of Nasty (covered here earlier) lit our hopes and the new tune The Don continue that trail.

Produced by the late Heavy-D this hard, straight forward with a ragga twist it got our heads nodding from the first bars. We took our eyes of Nas and he brings back this New York banger that floored us when we least expected it.

Wax Poetics 10th anniversary mix Pt. 2

The other week we brought you Dâm-Funk's bumpin' Prince mixtape he put together to celebrate Wax Poetic's magazine's 10th anniversary 50th issue.

We heard that the mag was a bit hard to come by and already sold out but the nice folks over at WP took notice. As a remedy for everyone who missed out they put out some of the articles online together with a second Prince retrospective mixtape. This time put together by FA (?) and it's just as good as the Dâm-Funk mix. Amazing!

The New French Movement: #2. Zerolex - Musique Ré-Apprivoisée

In the second part of our new series, we turn to new mindblowing beats from Besançon, France. We gave you the heads up a couple of months back with the Beathearts exclusive instrumental from the new Don Da None EP. This time it's producer and poetry slam artist Zerolex who got some of his friends together for this remix EP entitled Musique Re-Apprivoisée (which means something like "re-tamed music").

This little gem really caught my attention. No surprise that we love instrumental beats and genre breaking productions but this really sticks out. It's organic, electronic, harmonic, rough and futuristic at the same time. The stand-out tracks for me are the Don Da None remix of Chambre indienne as well as Snubluck's rework of All over again.

We'll definitely keep our ears open for more music from these guys. Available for free (or name your price) now via Bandcamp.
