Beat Generation Series: The Buscrate 16-bit Ensemble (The 2K14 Update)

It's hard to believe but it's been almost two years since our first feature in the Beat Generation interview series with Orlando "Buscrates" Marshall. This past weekend we caught up with Buscrates to get an update what's been cooking in the 16-bit basement.

You've been down since day one and was featured in the very first episode of the Beatgeneration interview series. The exclusive track you shared with us ("Phoenix rising") is still the tune that has gotten the most plays, buzz, shares and attention. You're still getting props every week about that groove with those sampled secret Polish drums. Still a wicked track. Did you ever try to add any vocals?

Thank you so much for reaching out to me, I'm so glad to have been there from the start! I kept that track in the vaults for a short while because I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with it, but then the opportunity came along to feature it on Beathearts, so everything worked out there. The thought of vocals never crossed my mind at the time I made that, that's why I added that Moog synth lead, to fill in some space where a vocalist may have been singing.

It's such a pleasure following you on Soundcloud always generous sharing a wide variety of sounds and inspirations. The last couple of months we've been nodding our heads to your rework of Teddy Riley's classic tune "Groove me" off Guy's debut album (1988). A daring challenge that you pulled off brilliantly. Somehow you kept that eighties sound but totally rearranged the groove. Ever worked on any other Teddy Riley tracks? It would be interesting to hear what a touch of the 16-bit magic could do to tunes like "Teddy's Jam pt II" or Black Girl's "90s girl" or Kool Moe Dee's "Go see the doctor".

I was out record shopping one day, and came across that Guy joint on 7". I always liked the original, and when I saw that there was an acapella on the flip side, I just knew I had to try something out with it! The record was only about $0.50 too.  If any of those jams have a capellas floating around I'd definitely be into trying those as well. It had been a while since I had done any remixes (aside from the Lisa Stansfield remix I did not too long before), and me finding this record was right on time.

We hear that East Liberty Quarters is at it again with an upcoming 7 inch on Rotating Souls. When is it due for release? Plans for any more releases with Grand Ear and Nice Rec this year? An album perhaps?

There hasn't been a set release date for it yet, but I'm sure it will be out sometime this Spring or Summer. We're always recording stuff, throwing ideas back and forth, and who knows what may come of it. I have both of my ELQ fam on an upcoming solo boogie/funk project due out this year sometime.I'm sure there will be a session or two when I go back to visit Pittsburgh in April. I moved to Atlanta in October 2012.

Back in 2012 you featured on a track on Copenhagen's finest Terry Testers debut album "Horses & Diamonds". Any plans for more collaborations with him?

That's the homie right there, anytime he has any ideas for collabs it's always on. I'm glad he reached out to us to put us on wax. Nothing's ever really planned, a lot of times things just happen haha..

What can we expect more from the Buscrates studio in 2014?

The aforementioned solo EP, some more stuff with my man Sam Champ (the other half of Extra Medium), a project I have with the homie Brett Eclectic - we formed a duo called Synthesiz, and we're on the boogie/funk tip. You can check two of our joints here:

Some stuff with Mecca:83 & DistantStarr, and probably even more that I haven't figured out yet! I'm playing catch-up on a lot of these projects, some of which I'm behind in due to an unfortunate incident where I was hit by a car on my bicycle back in February..I was sidelined for about a month. I have recovered swiftly..not at 100% but probably a good 85-90% and getting better daily.

Beathearts top selections 2012 - TheStrom

2012 was a good year. A very good year. Going through our posts and playlists over the past year it was easy to identify great tunes. But it was equally hard to single out an all through solid album - a future classic. There were many good efforts from the likes of Frank Ocean, Actress, Robert Glasper and others but very few of them ended up on repeat for us. At least in their entireties. For that reason I decided to put forward the top selections of 2012 in three sections:

* Top 5 artists of year (instead of releases) that impressed me the most in 2012
* Best tunes of the year (Spotify link)
* Top 3 expectations for 2013

------------================-------------

ARTISTS OF THE YEAR

1.Prince (!?)
You say what?! I haven't quite been able to figure out why but it's been a crazy year for Prince. Prince Roger Nelson of the 80s that is. For an artist that hasn't released a single track (that we know of) Prince has been huge 2012. It might have started already last year with the return of Prince live in session at festivals around the world. Then Jam & Lewis and the Time reunited as the Original 7even and released the Condensate album. That sparked a "Nu-Prince-Movement" that's been pulsating all year:

*Wax Poetic put out a Prince special edition including no less than two mixtapes of peak performances from the man.
*All year we've been flooded with Prince edits and covers from the likes of Dâm-Funk, Frank Ocean et al.
*Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip has been tearin' the roof off with his DJ sessions when dropping the 1984 obscure Morris Day & Prince jam session Cloreen Bacon Skin.

If that doesn't convince you there's a new biography entitled Prince by Matt Thorne and the other week there was a TWO (!) day seminar at the London Institute of Contemporary Art analyzing the Prince's work.

All we can say is that his importance for most of the new music we listen to today cannot be overrated. One of the greatest tributes that's been on heavy rotation for us was the Wax Poetics mixtape vol.2:

Download: Wax Poetics - Prince mixtape part 2

------------================-------------

2.Tall Black Guy
Without a doubt one of the artist that we have spun the most this year. His edits, compilations and original tracks have been off the hook. His Tempo Dreams compilation for Bastard Jazz set a new standard for beatmakers to live up to.

Our stand out track of the year from TBG was his totally unexpected remake of James Brown's I feel good. You've gotta have guts to take on a classic tune and flip it into something completely different. We've said it before but it's like a part 2 of Waajeed's Tron track. Absolutely genius!

Download: Tall Black Guy - What's good

------------================-------------

3.Buscrates 16-bit Ensemble
What can we say. Orlando Buscrates Marshall has had an amazing year. As a producer for Kiara, as a group member in East Liberty Quartet, as a remixer as well as a solo artist he has blown us away all year. If Dâm-Funk is the king of boogie - Buscrates is most definitely next in line to take the reign.

*Best release: Buscrates - Funktropolis EP

*Best remake: Vesta Williams - Don't blow a good thing (Buscrates re-edit)

*Best production: Kiara Reves - Shine on

Buscrates was also the first artist in our Beat Generation Interview Series

------------================-------------

4.Miles Bonny
Ever since we got Miles Bonny's seminal track Still Miles with DJ Day back in 2009 he's been on our radar. Numerous EPs, collaborations and albums later his sense of quality is second to none.

Miles toured heavily this year with Brenk Sinatra (as S3) in Germany and Poland going back to his Polish roots.

Miles been putting out amazing releases all year and all you regulars might recall that S3's album Supa Soul Sh*t was our album of the month in November.

Download: S3 - Don't stop

------------================-------------

5.Frank Ocean
No matter what you think about the hype there's no denying Mr. Ocean's huge influence on the soundtrack to the world 2012.

From the first underground mixtapes and bootlegs to TV-commerials and inflight entertainment he's taken the world by storm. With incredible productions and solid harmonies in my ears his sound is the 2012 equivalent to Gamble & Huff in the 70ies. Channel Orange was one of very few solid albums of 2012 and we have high hopes of what's to come in 2013.

Download: Frank Ocean - Sweet

EXPECTATIONS FOR 2013:

1.The return of Waajeed

Waajeed will be huge in 2013. On a recent BBC Radio 1 show Waajeed revealed four projects that will see the light of day next year: Jeedeci, Electric Street Orchestra, Tiny Hearts and new label Dirt Tech Reck. If you missed out get a preview of the tracks below.

2.Enter T-E-E-D

We've had T-E-E-D a.k.a. Orlando Higginbottom on our radar all year and he was responsible for one of best remixes of the year reconstructing Donaeo's When Angels sing. His mixtapes and remixes have popped up everywhere we turned and we have very high expectations for what's to come in 2013. Check his essential mix from BBC below:

>T-E-E-D - BBC essential mix

3.Maya Jane Coles

Starting off as a producer and only recently jumped on the 1's and 2's, Maya still put together one of the best mixtapes of the year for DJ-kicks. (Listen on Spotify). It's sublime blend of minimal, experimental but oh so funky deep house tracks. With the quality of her mixes and own releases expectations are through the roof for her upcoming album. Rumors say it will feature Miss Kittin among others and have vocals on all tracks. Watch this space!

Mecca:83 - Nightshift ft Buscrates & Dj Ivan6

Yup! Yup! Mecca:83 and Buscrates closing an amazing year with another banger. As all regulars know we do what we can to promote their geniuses, but to us it's unbelievable how these cats don't get more attention.

Evan 'Mecca:83' Jones has been one of our most solid providers of instrumental beats the last couple of years. Always on point. Always introducing surprising elements into his music. Even though he puts out different styles he somehow always manage to create a vibe that makes your head nod.

Orlando 'Buscrates 16-bit ensemble' Marshall is one of the most versatile producers we've featured in our Beat Generation Series. He has put out amazing remixes, re-edits and mixtapes as well as produced boom-bap hip-hop and futuristic soul music.

On this track they once again join forces to bring us Nightshift. A new aquaintence is DJ Ivan6 who we believe features on cuts (?). Anyway, don't sleep on this track. Free download below.

Terry Tester - The Dunkel Radio Mixtape

Cold rainy dark Monday. What better way to ease up your day than with this kick-ass mixtape from Danish producer Terry Tester. In a time when a mixtape can be anything from a loose collections of song not good enough for album release with the DJ screaming his name instead of beatmixing the tunes, this MIXTAPE is such a relief.

In my world there are three criterion for a great mixtape:
1. Great selection of tunes that work together
2. Great beatmix and/or scratching
3. The guts to mix new tunes with older gems

Terry aces all these and show of his influences and great taste in music by seamlessly fusing everything from hiphop to Detroit house to UK street soul. Terry, fantastic job. We salute you! Get it below before it's gone.

Buscrates 16-bit Ensemble - Funktropolis

Getting ready for the weekend and what better way get in the mood than with a pile of new jams from Buscrates. If you're a regular you know this Pittsburg native has been a returning feature for us the last year and a half.

His productions are most often on the funk/boogie side but for this release he goes all in. As far as we can tell they're all new tunes except for his slick cover of Valentine Brothers' Computer Boogie covered here earlier.

We don't know for sure but judging from the title and the Prince-70s-funk-jam sound on the EP, Funktropolis is an ode to the Minneapolis sound with a 16-bit Ensemble twist. Planning on spinning Dâm-Funk, Kleer or Roger Troutman this fine Friday? Add this EP to the blend and I guarantee it'll keep your head nodding.

If you've missed out on our Buscrates special in our Beat Generation interview series, here's a second chance to grab the exclusive track Phoenix rising.

Buscrates & Kiara Ravae - Shine On

More goodnes from the Buscrates basement. This time he's hooked up with vocalist Kiara Ravae also hailing from Pittsburgh. The result is a fantastic piece of steel city street soul that leave us craving for more. We have high hopes for a potential upcoming EP or album from the duo!

Kiara:

"This is one of those feel good joints about having fun and going with the flow of things. Stay positive.. it's hella hard for me to do but I tried to channel what positivity I have into this song"

Shine on is not available for purchase or download (yet!) but while waiting for a potential release of the track here's Kiara's smooth cover of Echo's Doorway over D'Angelo/Premier's beat for Devil's pie.

Buscrates 16-bit ensemble - Computer Boogie

Here's a great version of Valentine Brothers classic Computer Boogie from 1984. Reworked by Buscrates 16-bit ensemble it reminds us of the funky legacy of John and William Valentine from Columbus, Ohio. You've probably heard their amazing Money's too tight to mention. At least in Simply Red's version.

Anyway, here's Orlando Buscrates Marshall on synthesizers, rhodes piano, drum programming and microkorg vocoder. It's still available as a free download so be fast!

The Beat Generation Series #3: Terry Tester (DK)

In our quest to discover new soulful underground music we come across many up and coming producers from all around the world. We thought is was about time to put the spotlight on a few of them that we think are about to blow up. We call it The Beat Generation Series.

The Beat Generation Series #3: Terry Tester (Denmark)

The third producer featured in our Beat Generation series is Thomas Månsson a.k.a. Terry Tester. Hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark, he's a part of the country's vivid experimental beat scene. We recently got in touch with Thomas to learn more about his inspirations and music making.

------------================-------------

We discovered you through Buscrates (Beat Generation Series #1) who put us onto your music. How did you hook up with him?

We met in a record store while I was staying with family in Pittsburgh back in 2001. I wasn't producing at that time but I was heavily into crate diggin', however, I was mostly interested in the classic breaks, all those records that had already been sampled to death. Bus taught me how to listen for samples and get into the more untapped sources; to check for which instruments cats used, whether it was a private or major label pressing, the whole science of it. Also, I had no idea what an MPC2000 was before I met him. I would have probably never gotten into beatmaking had it not been for him.

You just dropped your debut album Horses & Diamonds (Mixed Ape Music) that absolutely floored us. Could you give us a track by track how the album came about?

For a few years I had been sending beats to Danish MC Per Vers, who's a major cat on the scene and one that I really wanted to work with. He had reserved some joints but never got around to using them. Instead he suggested that he release them as an instrumental project on his label Mixed Ape Music on which he had already released projects by producers Exampler and Kriswontwo. So Horses & Diamonds is kind of a fragmented affair. It's not like I went into the studio for three months and came out with a record. Some productions date as far back as 2004, like e.g. Sparkle, which Verb Ink then came through and laced with rhymes in the mixing process less than 3 months ago. The e.p.'s most recent productions are Subcrazy, For Her and Learn The Rules which I made last year.

What does the creative process behind an original Terry Tester track look like? Is it a jam session where you pull out the best parts or more straight forward song writing?

It's never straight forward. I never have a masterplan laid out in my head before I start working. Usually what gets me going is a sound or a chord or a drumbreak that I hear on a record. It's a rather unorganized process and sometimes I go for weeks without touching my equipment. I once saw a video clip of how DJ Premier had a stack of records sitting next to his turntable, and he'd go through them one by one, like an assembly line, churning out joint after joint. I could never be that organized. I wish I could, I'd get much more music done that way. I hear something, then I sample it and just act on impulses while I work. Sometimes nothing comes out of it. Sometimes it's the birth of a banger.

Who were your musical heroes when growing up?

I used to be exclusively into Michael Jackson. Public Enemy changed all that around 89 or so....

Public Enemy - Fight the power (Do the right thing OST 1989)

Reading up your discography we realize we already have a few of your productions in our crates without knowing. Jahi's album Souhop the Breakthru on DJ Typhoon's Sonny B music and Marc Mac's Dirty Old Hiphop remixes (BBE). How did you start working with DJ Typhoon?

There's a record store in Copenhagen called CAN. One day when I was shopping for records, I gave the owner a disc of beats. He passed it on to DJ Noize, who is also a Nobody Beats The Beats affiliate, and he passed it on to Typhoon, who was then in the process of collecting beats for the Jahi record. That was actually my first beat to ever be released. And it had Dwele on the hook! I couldn't get my hands down for a minute...

There are so many great Danish producers and acts; Tue Track, Booty Cologne, Abdullah S, Nick Nack, Ashtiani & Baltzer, GrafiskMusik. Any other collaboration in past/future?

I'm working on a few tracks right now with a producer called Kriswontwo, who is also a Mixed Ape Music recording artist. Back in 2009 I released a project together with producer Twelve Beats under the moniker The Works. I'm hoping we'll get back in the studio soon for another project. Also, I have an album in the making with crossover soul outfit Vincent Van Go Go, with whom I've already released two albums. On the new album I'm more deeper involved in the production than on the previous albums.

Your mix of styles unavoidably makes us reminisce over the legendary radio show on Danish National Radio P3 called Det D.U.R. (Danish Underground Radio). That show was so influential in the late 80s and opened our eyes to hiphop, techno, soul and house. It was hosted by Soulshock, DJ Delgado, EziCut and Kenneth Bager. Do you remember that show?

I sure do! I used to tape it. Det D.U.R. was such a huge influence on me. I was 9 years old when it was on the air, and although I tuned in mostly for the hip hop, every once in a while there'd be a house or techno joint that got under my skin. In that respect, I think it broadened my musical horizon in a major way, and it's certainly something I still carry with me. Today, I'm a regular listener to the Benji B show which I think is kinda similar in its range of styles. Hip hop is definitely my language but I'm also heavily inspired by cats like 4 Hero, Theo Parrish, Marcellus Pittman, Actress, Floating Points etc.

Download: Det D.U.R. - Top selections 1991 (The final show Dec 27th 1991)
A short comment on this download. Sorry non-scandinavians this show is in Danish but we're pretty sure you'll enjoy to reminisce over the epic selection of tunes. Just as for Thomas it definitely broadened our view of music and inspired us to push boundries. Tracklist is available here.

What are your inspirations today? Could you drop three albums or tunes that have recently blown your mind?

In heavy rotation right now is Nas Daughters, Marcellus Pitmann Untitled and Widows Widows EP.

The last couple of years crews like The Robert Glasper Experiment, BadBadNotGood, El Michels Affair and Will sessions have literally blown up with their live sessions. Is there a live Terry Tester experience? If so what's your live set-up like? DJ-set? Jam sessions? Invited guests?

There is a Terry Tester live experience but it's really basic. It's just me, a laptop and a midi controller, but it gets the job done. I recently performed Sparkle off the Horses & Diamonds EP with Verb Ink live on the mic. I wanna get into that kinda stuff more...

Finally, which other up and coming producer do you think deserves more attention?

The big homie Twelve Beats.

------------================-------------

Is there an old/new track, mixtape or live session you would consider sharing exclusively with Beathearts' readers?

Sure! Back in the good old MySpace days I posted a couple of Little Brother remixes that Phonte would comment on and I'd be proud as hell. I made this remix of The Way You Do It in 2008 and it hasn't been shared since. Enjoy!

Terry Tester - Horses & Diamonds

Our fellow crate digger in Pittsburgh, Buscrates, recently put us on to this great Danish producer Thomas Månsson a.k.a. Terry Tester. As it turns out he just put out his debut album. If features a wide range of styles from the dark electronic grooves on the first track The neck snap to the Quasimoto inspired Sparkle ft Verb Ink and the Buscrates featured headnodder Three variations of Onaje.

We got in touch with Thomas to learn more about his music making, inspirations and the album. Coming up very soon is feature on him as the 3rd installment of our Beat Generation Series. Here's a taster where he talks about the new album:

You just dropped your debut album Horses & Diamonds (Mixed Ape Music) that absolutely floored us. Could you give us a run down of how the album came about?

For a few years I had been sending beats to Danish MC Per Vers, who's a major cat on the scene and one that I really wanted to work with. He had reserved some joints but never got around to using them. Tall Black Guy presents Tempo Dreams

Terell Wallace better known as Tall Black guy has had a great year so far. His amazing reworks of classics from Stevie Wonder, Fela Kuti and James Brown has stirred up a lot of dust. Several of those reworks were put out via Brooklyn based BSTRD Boots. The mother label Bastard Jazz continues to tap into that golden touch by letting him compile exclusive tunes from some of the finest up and coming beatmakers from around the world.

Last month in our Beats Generation series we gave you the heads up that Buscrates would feature a dope track called Horizons. Other Beathearts favourites who contribute are Applejac (Jazzy Tofu), Ta-Ku and of course Tall Black Guy himself.

Download: Tall Black Guy - Sparkling adventure

The Beat Generation Series #1: Buscrates (US)

In our quest to discover new soulful underground music we come across many up and coming producers from all around the world. We thought is was about time to put the spotlight on a few of them that we think are about to blow up. We call it The Beat Generation Series.

The Beat Generation Series #1: Buscrates 16-bit Ensemble (US)

First up is Orlando Marshall a.k.a. Buscrates 16-bit Ensemble. With an alias as dope as his beats, Buscrates is a DJ/producer hailing from Pittsburgh's East End. What first caught our attention was his stunning refix of french nusoul singer Meemee Nelzy's Comme Un Lotus. For the last year or so there have been edits, remixes and beats popping up from all over the place from the man. Funky, deep, futuristic soul, just the way we like it. We got in touch with Buscrates to learn more about his inspirations and music making.

-------------===============-------------

We first heard of you about a year ago through your amazing remix of Meemee Nelzy’s Comme un Lotus. Our first thought was “great to hear that the French scene are on top of things again!” then only to discover that the fresh new French sound originated from Pittsburgh. How did you hook up with her?

Thanks man, I appreciate that! That's still probably my favorite remix I've done so far. She reached out to me on Twitter, and I gladly obliged. It ended up being on Moovmnt's top 5 remixes of 2011. Thank you Meemee!

Any other relations to France? We recently covered a collective of French producers Don Da None and Zerolex who are putting out mind blowing productions at the moment.

Other than Meemee, my homie Dela has been rockin it for a minute. That's actually how I first heard of her, through him.

We gotta give you props for your name: Buscrates 16-bit ensemble. How did you come up with that?

That name came from the sampler I was using for years: the Akai MPC2000XL. It processes the samples in 16-bit, and at the time I wasn't playing any instruments or involved in a band or anything, so I referred to all the sounds and samples I was using as an ensemble, and combined the two. BusCrates came from the days of hauling records to gigs on public transit. It's quite literal!

Just to sort things out: Buscrates 16-bit Ensemble is you as a solo artist right? Tell us about your other constellation East Liberty Quarters.

Yep, Buscrates is just me solo. East Liberty Quarters is a three-man crew. Myself, Geeman/Grand Ear and Nice Rec.

Inspired by early 80s boogie funk records we're all primarily beat makers, but we wanted to take it a step further and actually make records in a somewhat similar vein as the records we all admire but put our own twist on it. So we went out and got some real analog boards and drum machines and learned to create from scratch. This has also helped take our beat making to another level.

We primarily record and play as a trio, but our last few live gigs included guitarist Zack Curl (of Smooth Tutors), and the last show we had him and his drummer Matt Brinson.

Beatmakers and drummers is a great source of inspiration for us. People like Karriem Riggins, Chris Dave, Madlib, Questlove, Kenny Dope and of course Dilla's music was a major reason to start writing about soulful underground music. Are you a drummer as well? When/how did you start making beats?

They're all amazing and inspiring artists. Kenny Dope did a remix to a track Nice Rec and I did for Miles Bonny and Bobby Blunt. I just saw a video of Chris Dave playing some Fela stuff and it was mind-blowing. I can play a few basic rhythms on a drum kit, but I'm no Bernard Purdie! Haha!

Miles Bonny & Bobby Blunt - Tonight's the night (Kenny dope remix)

I started making beats sometime in 2000 after a few years learning and discovering samples from Geeman. Back in the early-mid 90s I used to roll with him to different record spots, and he'd be up all hours of the night on his sampler chopping up records. He saw that I had a pretty good ear for beats and encouraged me to make the move of getting a sampler. My first was the Ensoniq EPS, after that I've had an EPS 16+, an Akai MPC60II, but throughout most of the last 10 years the Akai MPC2000XL that was my main piece of equipment.

Like we said we first got to know you through your brilliant remixes. Was that how you got started releasing music?

I started to drop music around the end of the MySpace era about 2006-early 2008 I would post some beats and occasional remixes here and there. Early on I didn't have a computer, so any remix from before then was me playing a track and running the acapella straight off the wax. That's how I did that Kev Brown remix in 2004. I was happy to see that I still had this laying around somewhere, as I've pretty much lost all those old beats on those crappy zip disks I was using!

Last year we talked to Yam Who? (Andy Williams) where he walked us through the organic process of reworking a track. What's your take on the remixing process? How do you go about reworking a track?

Props to Yam Who! Big fan of that Herbie dub he did [Star in your eyes]. Before I do a remix, I usually sit and listen to the original version to see what I could do to put my own spin on it. For example, when I did the Vesta Williams remix, I wanted the bass on to be a thicker than the one on the original version, which was made in 1986 at a time when most of the new synths and stuff they used were a bit thin on the low end. Moog power to the rescue!

What does the creative process behind an original Buscrates track look like? Is it a jam session where you pull out the best parts or more straight forward song writing?

I can't really say that there's a method to the madness. Whether I'm digging through and listening to records, slicing up a random drum break or sitting at my boards (or some combination of the three), I just let it happen and follow whichever direction it takes me.

Who were your musical heroes when growing up?

So many! Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Roy Ayers, Michael Jackson, and George Clinton were played often in my house when I was a kid and I am thankful for it. My parents always made sure I was surrounded by good, quality music. It starts early on!

Are there any musical genres and styles you’re curious to discover?

I want to get more into Dub. Lee Perry, Augustus Pablo, Ras Michael, stuff like that. More late 60s/early 70s psych and experimental rock stuff. There's this band called The United States Of America, they only put out one record in '68. Still hunting for an original copy of that. They were very big on electronic sounds early in the game. One of my favorite bands, Stereolab, was probably influenced by that sound.

Any dream collaborations?

On the hip-hop side, definitely Homeboy Sandman. Large Pro. I would love to have Roy Ayers sprinkle some vibes over one of my jams, too.

Another great producer we also discovered last year was Manchester based Mecca:83 (Evan Jones). You collaborated on his track Midnight Kids. How did you hook up with him?

Evan hit me up on Facebook one day and wanted me to add some stuff to a track called Detroit Twilight. That's Mecca:83, me and Emanative. This one was first. We did Midnight Kids along with Kan Sano after that.

Are you planning more joint productions with Mecca:83 going forward?

No doubt, that's my homie! We'll be on more jams I'm sure.

The last couple of years crews like The Robert Glasper Experiment, BadBadNotGood, El Michel's Affair and Will sessions have literally blown up with their live sessions. We haven't been fortunate enough catch Buscrates 16-bit ensemble live yet but we have high expectations. What is your live set-up DJ-set? Jam sessions? Invited guests?

Other than East Liberty Quarters shows and my own DJ gigs, I haven't really put together a solo live show, but that is definitely something to consider working out in the near future. I did something along the lines with a guitarist named Luke Starcher (who also plays in Smooth Tutors). He played his guitar and Microkorg, and I was using an MPC2000XL with a Roland Juno-1 synthesizer. Pretty fun experimental set.

What can we expect from the Buscrates studios in 2012?

A 2nd EP from East Liberty Quarters, a track [called Horizons] on a Tall Black Guy compilation on Bastard Jazz, a track on Terry Tester's Horses & Diamonds EP - all on vinyl! I'm also wrapping up a project with Sam Champ (collectively we're called Extra Medium) that's due out sometime this Summer/Fall. There may be a 7" vinyl release from that as well. I also have a solo project in the works, but I'm still figuring out all the details for it. Stay tuned!

Finally, which other up and coming producer do you think deserves more attention?

Denmark's own Terry Tester of The Works (http://soundcloud.com/terrytester). Dude's got crazy beats! He has put in a lot of work over the last decade or so. Glad to see him dropping some more wax. Check for his Horses & Diamonds EP, which is due out this coming Friday, May 23 [on Mixed Ape Music] .

As a bonus and to kick off the Beat Generation series, Orlando offered us an exclusive track from the Buscrates 16-bit vaults!

Buscrates on the Beathearts exclusive download:

I chopped some drums I found on a Polish record I dug up at some thrift store for a quarter, and the rest was just spontaneous creation.

I've held that one back for a while but felt like it should finally be heard. I called myself saving it for a project, but I got sidetracked and involved in all this other stuff so I eventually scrapped the idea. Once these other projects I'm involved with come to fruition, I'll definitely be starting something else of my own!

Vesta Williams - Don't Blow A Good Thing (Buscrates Radio Boogie Remix)

Finishing of the week in style. Just discovered this lil' gem put out by our favourite Pittsburgh beatsmith Buscrates 16-bit ensemble (Orlando Marshall) a couple of days ago. It's a bubbling subbass rework of Vesta Williams Don't blow a good thing from 1986. Vesta who sadly left us last year at the age of 53. Excellent tribute to the lady from Buscrates.

Mecca:83 x Kan Sano x Buscrates - Midnight kids

Nice little treat from Mecca:83 (Evan Jones). For this track, Evan teamed up Tokyo based producer/keyboard player Kan Sano and Pittsburgh's beat prodigy Buscrates. Apparently it just missed the deadline for his recent Life Sketches release but rather than letting it collect dust he decided share it.

Midnight Kids is also included as a digital bonus track on Life Sketches Vols1&2 which is available now via his Bandcamp

DJ Center - Everything in time (Remixed)

Just back from a short summer break and this was cooking in our mailbox. DJ Center a.k.a. Emil Herscher is a Brooklyn based DJ and producer who put out his great debut album Everything in time last year (listen here).

Next step is a remix album due for release in October. The album features Beathearts heroes DJ Spinna and Waajeed as well as J.Rawls, DJ OBaH, Sam Champ, Captain Planet, DJ Eleven and others. As a warm-up for the upcoming album Emil will drop a selection of the remixes as free downloads. First up is his Chaka Khan remake You got the love featuring Gretchen Parlato remixed by Sam Champ and Buscrates 16-bit Ensemble. Listen and download it below

As a bonus, here's DJ Center's dope set from the N.Y. release party for the vinyl version of "In a song" of the album.

Mecca:83 - The life sketches EP

What a day! Another stunning release just dropped from Manchester beat surgeon and semi professional crate digger Mecca:83 a.k.a. Evan Jones. The Life Sketches EP features among others another Beathearts favourite that has been bumping in our headphones the last couple of weeks, Buscrates 16 bit ensemble.

With his new new project, Mecca:83 continues from where the previous 3 For Free EP left off. Expect to hear soulful instrumental beats fused with a analog sound drawing influence from the golden era sounds of Pete Rock as much as the current instrumental beat scene. Evan's debut album under the Rise moniker is available now via Juno.

Beathearts flavor of the month: BusCrates 16-Bit Ensemble

“It came from being a DJ, not having a car, and taking crates of records on the bus.”

With an alias as dope as his beats, Buscrates a.k.a. Orlando Marshall is our Beathearts flavour of the month. Great name, great beats from this DJ/producer from Pittsburgh's East End.
