Miguel Atwood-Ferguson & the Suite for Ma Dukes Orchestra - Untitled/Fantastic

Last year, with support from ArtDontSleep, VTech and Mochilla, Carlos Nino and Miguel Atwood Ferguson produced a four song orchestral EP of music originally produced by James “Jay Dilla” Yancey. The pair has since then performed the EP, other Dilla compositions, with a 36 piece orchestra at live concerts in LA with the help of Dwele, Bilal, Talib Kweli, Common, Karriem Riggins. All proceeds has been going directly to Ma Dukes. You can purchase them here.

If Suite for Ma Dukes has unlocked the emotional power of Dilla’s music, Untitled/Fantastic is the key. Here it is, and as Houseshoes said: "I can’t watch Untitled/Fantastic without tearing up.." This is very emotional also for us at beathearts.

We give you the original track from J Dilla as well for you to feel where this all came from.

Just spotted this fantastic remix at soundcloud. Their great debut album 'Kort Før Dine Læber' was released 2008. Also check out two other nice acts of this danish home: 'Owusu & Hannibal' and 'Quadron'.

A tribute from beathearts for the second fallen soldier of Slum Village. Titus "Baatin" Glover (March 8, 1974–July 31, 2009).

T3 is the last living member of the original Slum Village, a group that's been very important in my life, and especially J Dilla. But that's for later on, this one's for Baatin.

Summer Jams

The summer isn't quite here yet, but we beathearts are eager to present the summer jam for 2010. And also reminisce on 2009's jam, in case you missed it.

So fresh, this is a radio rip just out from Gilles Peterson show. With Jack Splash (Plantlife) on the beat and Cee-Lo on the vocals. Let your ears melt and your head nod to this when you shine in the parks with your cold red stripe.

Cee-Lo - I Want You (prod. Jack Splash)

And a throwback from 2009. Frank Nitt from the detroit-duo Frank-n-Dank. Hopefully we will see a solodebut soon from this emcee. Bounce to the music!

Beathearts rewind #2: French old school love

Got so inspired by our decision to do a Rewind section as well as Onra's Long Distance track (our first mention on this blog) we decided to do a double post. Three mid-ninties french tunes showing their love to that old school slick r'n'b sound. Enjoy:

Beathearts rewind #1: Nu Yorican Soul - The nervous track

We really like Spinemagazine's Friday Throwback concept where they highlight old classic tunes. Tracks that might have been forgotten but still shines. So in ode to Spinemagazine we present:

Beathearts Rewind #1

First off, the true story behind Nu Yorican Soul's The nervous track. One of the most amazing percussion tracks of all time.

I found a cassette (!) the other day with an old interview with Kenny Dope Gonzales and appearantly the story behind the track was this:

Tuesday night and Kenny's bored in the Masters at Work Manhattan based studio. Listening to a some strings recorded earlier by his partner Louie Vega he flips through some old jazz records in search of inspiration. An old Shelly Manne record on Philips gets his attention. Samples the break, loops it and continues through the record piles until he find three more beats including Louie Benson, Willy Bobo and Paul Humphries.

Kenny feels he's onto something and adds layer after layer on Vega's strings using several drumloops at the same time to build the amazing beats in different channels.

Louie Vega calls Mike Weiss (founder of Nervous records) at 3:30 am on that same Tuesday night and says: "Yo get your ass over to the Studio, Kenny and I have to play you something!"
Mike wonders if maybe they can wait until breakfast and Louie answers that if he wants the track he has to go there now! Mike goes over and finds the track that will be forever linked with the label, hence 'The Nervous Track'.

If Kenny Dope can drop bombs like these when he's bored, I wonder how many future classics are made this lazy sunny Sunday afternoon?

Jay Electronica - A Million In The Morning

We just had to post this. New fantastic music from Jay Electronica, the most hyped cat these last years, a protege of Erykah Badu. Marvelous emcee with the unique quality to move all listeners, regardless of style in music. This is the title track to a new documentary following Gavin McInnes as he endures 123 hours in NYC without any sleep. See the trailer here. Seems interresting but very bizarre!
